About Heather
The utter joy and indescribable emotions of meeting your new-born baby is something you don’t forget. You watch your beautiful bright baby develop into a loving and playful toddler. But suddenly and inexplicably they regress into an isolated and perplexing world – autism.
What you don’t foresee is your child, 13 years later, possibly still wearing nappies. A teenager, who has never uttered a word and who since becoming autistic, has shown no sign of love towards her parents.
Welcome to the world of autism at its most severe.
Autism is a life-long brain disorder that adversely affects people’s ability to communicate, form relationships and make sense of the world around them. Autism can also wreck marriages, destroy parents’ health and upsets the lives of siblings.
If you think autism is not your problem, think again. As our understanding rises, autism is being better diagnosed and we are told now that one in a hundred of people has autism.
You might know an autistic child, yet not really known how to help.
But there is something we can all do. Support Autistica, the only charity in the UK raising funds for research into the causes of autism. The good news is that researchers funded by Autistica are starting to unravel the complex causes of this mysterious condition.
But this research costs a lot of money and I am would like to ask you to support this worthwhile charity.
Once the causes of autism are known, scientists can look at effective treatments that will improve the quality of life for my lovely daughter.
