Professor Tony Charman

Professor Tony Charman, Professor in Autism Education at the Institute of Education. His main research interest is the investigation of early social cognitive development in children with autism and the clinical application of this work via screening, epidemiological, intervention and 'at risk' studies. Currently he is co-investigator on the British Autism Study of Infant Siblings (BASIS) programme. Professor Charman is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist and works in a clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust where he provides a diagnostic service for children with complex neurodevelopmental conditions.  His professional activities include former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry; Associate Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders; International Editor at Large Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and he is on the Editorial/Advisory Boards several other journals. Professor Charman has served on a number of expert panels for the Medical Research Council in the UK and NIH/CDC in the USA. He is a scientific member of the Advisory Group to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism and has worked closely with the National Autistic Society, TreeHouse (formerly Parents’ Autism Campaign for Education) and Autistica to advocate for services and positive policy development for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.
