Event : Lecture: Two-way Pathways between Research and Clinical Practice & Health Policies

 

Since 2009 Kingwood has organised a series of lectures concerning research and practice, delivered by some of the UK's leading researchers and practitioners in the field of autism. Lectures are intended for families, professionals, service commissioners and interested members of the public. Entry is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Tea and coffee provided from 6.30pm.

 

This lecture will be delivered by Professor Sir Michael Rutter is Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London.

Event : Family Fun Day

 

The Isle of Wight branch of the National Autistic Society (NAS) has organised two fundraising events to celebrate the fourth annual World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) on Saturday 2nd April 2011. The first event will be a free Family Fun Day taking place at the West Wight children's centre and sports centre Moa Place, Freshwater between 11-3pm encouraging parents and children to participate in fun activities including: Circus skills, Family zumba, Kids yoga, Face painting, Arts & Crafts activities, Tombola and Lucky dip. The day also provides the chance for families affected by autism to meet and raise awareness of the condition within the community

This event will showcase some of the IOW's top bands who will be performing at this year's Isle of Wight Festival and Bestival. Event : World Autism Awareness Day lecture

 

Queensmill School, an outstanding specialist state school for children and young people with autism, is hosting its first public lecture on March 28th, as part of the celebration of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd. Anyone with an interest in autism – personal or professional – is welcome to attend this important evening.

 

The school is proud to announce that Roy Richard Grinker, Professor of Anthropology at George Washington University, and himself the parent of a young person with autism, is coming to Britain for the first time to lecture on his book “Unstrange Minds:  Remapping the World of Autism”.  In the Spectator, Charlotte Moore pronounced this book ‘Intelligent and original  . . .  opens new areas in the autism debate’ whilst Temple Grandin talked of the author’s descriptions of the perceptions of autism in other cultures as being ‘fascinating, uplifting, moving and disturbing’.

 

For those of you interested in coming to the lecture, in meeting Prof. Grinker, and in networking with others from the UK world of autism, attendance is free but must be registered.

Event : Scientific Meeting

 

A one-day scientific meeting organised by Dr Janet De Wilde and the BIR's Magnetic Resonance Committee on behalf of the British Institute of Radiology which will discuss the current applications of both structural and functional MRI as a biomarker in neurological conditions. 
Following the recent publicity around diagnosing Autism using MRI, this event will delve into questions such as "Are some conditions more suited to imaging biomarkers than others?" and "Can imaging biomarkers be applied rigorously to conditions governed by behaviours such as Autism?". This meeting will also examine looking at MRI biomarkers for early onset and progression of disease in such cases as Dementia. The application of techniques such as Voxel Based Morphometry (VBM), Feature Based Morphometry (FBM), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for deriving image biomarkers will be considered.

Pupils at Prior's Court School joined by families and staff will be wearing World Autism Awareness Day t-shirts to walk, run, cycle or scoot as part of a sponsored Walkathon.
