A new study is claiming to have found a new blood and urine test for autism. We think that some of the media has over-hyped the science.
This is not a study funded by Autistica, but we think it is important for to share the facts and our opinion.
See BBC article.
Why this is not a test for autism
The study was interesting and gives us more clues as to why autistic people might be different. The study does not prove that this test can be used to diagnose autism because:
- Only a small number of children took part in the study - 38 autistic children and 31 who were not autistic.
- The research only looked at differences in autistic children and typically developing children but does not show whether these differences are due to autism or other conditions like ADHD and anxiety.
- The researchers used a technique called machine learning which picks up some patterns that humans cannot. It is highly likely that they found these differences by chance.
Why early diagnosis is important
This research was covered widely because families are keen to get a diagnosis as soon as possible. Many families wait 3-4 years for diagnosis. Autism can be diagnosed from age two but the average age of diagnosis is 4.5 years. Timely diagnosis is crucial for giving autistic people the best chance in life but should be accompanied by evidence-based support.
What happens now?
Further studies are needed to understand more about the differences reported in this study.
We know that research can play an important role in speeding up and improving accuracy of diagnosis to give people and families the early support they need and deserve.
For now the best way to diagnose autism is still through clinical interview and observation. When new promising techniques emerge we will be sure to share those with you.
Language use by researchers
Many parents and autistic people have rightly expressed concern about the use of the word 'disease' by the research team discussing this study on the BBC. We agree that autism should not be described in this way. Autism is a condition which describes a multitude of differences, which can bring a variety challenges and strengths to each person. We have spoken to the team and their press office to ask that they change their language in the future.
