Employers often miss neurodivergent talent. The unseen CV represents all the neurodivergent people who have been overlooked in the workplace when, with the right support, they could have been a valuable addition to a team.

That’s why we’re calling on employers to take part in the Neurodiversity Employers Index, NDEI®, to learn how to become a leader in neuroinclusion in the workplace.

1 in 7 people is neurodivergent. Chances are a few of your colleagues are too. Many neurodivergent people have sought-after skills that make them desirable employees. But they face barriers to getting jobs and being their best and most productive selves at work.

Many employers have workplace policies and processes that unknowingly disadvantage neurodivergent people, including:

  • Job descriptions with unnecessary emphasis on communication skills.
  • Stressful interview environments can cause someone’s vocal tics to become more frequent, affecting their performance.
  • Insufficient flexibility or reasonable adjustments. This can lead to numerous sick days, impacting someone’s career prospects.
  • Lack of understanding about eye contact differences meaning an otherwise brilliant candidate gets overlooked for the role.

Neurodivergent strengths in the workplace

We know neurodiverse teams perform better. We also know from research that neurodivergent people have cognitive strengths meaning they can outperform their neurotypical peers for things like:

  • Innovative problem-solving and creative ideas.
  • Focused interests with sustained attention and excellent information retention.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Logical analysis.

Many organisations want to do more to make their workplace more inclusive of neurodivergence. Some don't know where to start, and others want to find more evidence-based ways for sustainable inclusion.
